Replacing a Broken Spring

Perhaps the most common garage door repair is related to broken or worn springs. When springs are working correctly, the door appears almost weightless, but this is an illusion. Garage doors are heavy. Because torsion springs are winding-up as the door closes, the closed position places the most stress on the spring. Therefore doors are commonly in the down position when a spring fails. This is a good thing, because failure near the top-of-travel means that a large heavy door is suddenly falling. Thus the principle that no person should ever stand directly in the path or walk through the doorway while a door is moving.

When replacing a broken spring a close fit is not good enough. Your spring should be properly calibrated to the exact weight, size and trajectory of your door. The wrong spring will diminish the life of the spring as well as cause undue stress to your garage door components and automatic opener.

A broken spring often occur suddenly and at a busy time when shopping for price is not convenient. Many times a vehicle is trapped inside the garage causing customers to feel the repair is urgent. Homeowners faced with this crisis sometimes fall into a bad deal with an unprincipled repair service. Sadly, it is not unusual to find a poorly done repair where the technician used an off-balanced spring that happened to be on his truck.

A proper repair for a broken spring is often a 2 trip service call. On the initial trip the technician can make a temporary repair to get your door up and running and gather the necessary details for a return trip with the exact replacement spring.

When we receive a “broken spring” call, MAC believes it’s only fair to provide an accurate estimate including the potential of a return trip. In some instances the homeowner is able to provide all the necessary details over the phone, allowing us to match the proper spring from stock and reduce the final billing. When our technician is at the repair site he will confirm the correct spring size. If necessary he will make the temporary repair and schedule a return trip to install the correct replacement spring.
